I’ve gone and done it again…

February 16th, 2007 by Jacque

I have a confession. My name is Jacque Landry and I am a bargain binger. It’s not that I’m cheap, at least I don’t think I am. It is more like I can’t resist the urge to buy something that’s been marked down. It doesn’t even have to be a great buy. I can’t seem to resist the magical pull of the words “bargain bin”. It’s as if a giant tractor beam sucks me into a vortex where I temporarily loose the ability to think reasonably. All I will see is the price and the lovely colors. It’s like that scene on the second installment of Bridget Jones just after she’s eaten the magic mushroom omlette. Groovy music plays and all I can think is “Beautiful yarn, beautiful bargains, what lovely colors”.

Alas my grip on reality strengthens as I cross the threshold of my home with three 82 yard hanks of very bright ribbon yarn (Trendsetter’s Calliope) that I have no idea what to do with. I really do like the colors of this stuff and would love to do something with it. Suggestions are as always, welcomed and encouraged.

While I’m on the subject of this yarn, I have a beef to share. It really creases me when yarn companies don’t name their yarn. I mean, come on people. Half of the fun of buying yarn is falling in love with the name of the colorway. I have even bought something sheerly because the name grabbed me, and names like 549-776A don’t really curl my toes if you know what I mean. So if you have anything to do with yarn manufacturing and you’re guilty of this, get off your lazy bum  and come up with some inspiring names for your yarn colors, and I don’t mean red, blue and yellow. Oh and if you aren’t capable then take a poll. The blogosphere is full of wonderfully talented people more than happy to lend an opinion. Am I right or what?

RANT IS OFFICIALLY OVER.

Hello, my name is Cole and I too have an addiction to bargains! It is hard to resist beautiful yarn when it is marked down/on sale. That is how I got some yarn for projects I just completed. Bernat Eyelash is $3.00+ at wal-mart. I found it for $1.00 and bought five! I understand your weakness because I think we all are succumbed to it when it comes to yarn.

That’s some really festive ribbon you’ve got there. It makes me happy just looking at all those colors. Any ideas what you’ll make with it?

it still hasn’t spoken to me, but I’ll come up with something in time…I hope.

I agree with you about naming colourways. I just can’t get a real feel for Colour # 9158. It just doesn’t call to me like Rooster Rock.

What gets me, is that if you go to their websites to look up a yarn that way, it usually does have a color name associated with it! Why can they not print that on the label? Like the Interlacements Tiny Toes I recently bought. Color #206 isn’t nearly as cool sounding as “Las Vegas Brights” but I wouldn’t have known it’s name unless I looked it up online. Sheesh. I’m with ya on this.

I am so with you on this bingeing thing. While mine isn’t yarn, it IS anything paper or beading related that has those to-die-for colors. And the yarn you show has those to-die-for colors so I understand why you couldn’t resist. It is truly beautiful.
