Project Monogamy

August 14th, 2007 by Jacque

AgapanthusWhen I first began to knit I would start a project andĀ  obsess over it until it was complete. I had to see it to it’s end and feel that sense of accomplishment in order to progress to another project.

Come to think of it, I never entertained the option of putting it away for a while to come back to later. It is just the way I am made I guess. I would read about other people’s knitting adventures and they would go on about all the WIP’s they had stashed about and I could never relate. I knew that if I were to have several projects going at once, I would live in a constant state of frustration because I would never feel as if anything were finished, and accomplishment is my drug.

The exception to this is when one project is on hold. While my yarn was in transit for the mystery hoodie I was able to get a lot done on the other beaded project. I am still being stingy with the details because I have not decided it’s fate, but it is going well.

So anyway, the reason some people are meant to be faithful to one project at a time has just been made clear to me. In my case the discovery was made as I picked up the mystery hoodie from it’s recent hiatus. The yarn arrived yesterday and after some badly needed household chores were completed I joined it and started knitting away happily. A few hours later this thought came out of the blue- It really just jumped into my head. “You bonehead, you are knitting the ribbing in the wrong sized needles.”

I grabbed my needle sizer (as if I needed to see the number to prove what I already knew) and sure enough. I had forgotten to go down to the required needle sizes. Dammit! So very calmly I stepped away from the needles, tucked my little project in my little bag and sat back to watch Deadwood. Clearly progress isn’t the only reasonĀ  I am a one-project-woman.

So this morning will be spent re-working that ribbing section and if all goes well the mystery hoodie will be blocking shortly.

That is so true - that simple confidence of knowing what you are doing and then all of the sudden the light goes off. At least in my case I could just give the socks away!
You’ll get back at it soon enough!

I hate when I make those mistakes. It’s especially more discouraging when a good chunk of the pattern has been completed. Like you said, the best thing to do sometimes is to put it away for a while and rework it later.
